New Friends

Mark Riley has just moved into a new neighborhood where he meets a new friend named Melody.  She has lots of questions for Mark about what it's like to use a wheelchair. She wonders about how he can do things other kids do.  Mark is happy to tell her about things he CAN do and how he does them a little differently.

I'm Melody James, but don't ever call me Melody!  Just call me
Mel.  I met this really cool guy, Mark Riley who has CP (that's short for cerebral palsy).  He uses a wheelchair all the time, but he doesn't call it a wheelchair.  He can do so many things!  He can swim, ride horses and play basketball!  Wow!  We played checkers all afternoon and he's good at that too.  I think I'm going to like having Mark for a neighbor.  He's so much fun to be with.

How do you make new friends?

Melody

Mark

Hi!  I'm Mark Riley and we just moved into our new house.  My mom has been so busy unpacking that she told me to go outside to pop wheelies and I met my first friend in the neighborhood.  Her name is Mel and she goes to the school where I will go.  She is so much fun, but she sure has lots of questions!  I was telling her about how I can do about a million things and she was surprised because she had never met anyone in a cruiser before.  I call my wheelchair a cruiser, because it's a souped up, super sport, faster than a jet plane, CRUISER!  Pretty cool, huh?  It's okay to ask me questions about how I use my wheelchair, or how I do stuff.
