Coping with the loss of a loved one by the willful act of another is in itself difficult. Family and friend survivors are expected to "go on" with their lives though they often feel isolated from others, thinking no one understands or cares about them. Adding to this trauma, many survivors put their grief on hold because the emotional energy is not available to deal with both the court proceedings and the emotional rigors of grief work. Their grief is repressed, making their turmoil difficult to work through.
Also, trying to understand the criminal court system is often difficult. Most survivors go to court expecting immediate justice. They may discover that the process is not what they expected and need help coping with the delays and accepting the rights granted the accused. The Homicide Survivors Program was created when a need was heard throughout the state for support for the survivors of homicide. Statistics show that in 1998 in the state of Alabama there were only 21 individual survivors of homicide assisted throughout state. Since the creation of the Homicide Survivors Program over 500 individuals have been assisted throughout the north Alabama area. We are here to support and assist you in your fight for justice!
