Hello everyone and Happy New Year! The Homicide Survivors Program hosted its 7th Annual Lights of Love Program on December 8th, 2008 at the Holiday Inn in downtown Huntsville. About 100 survivors and supporters of the program joined together to honor victims of homicide. The program started with opening remarks by Chief Reyes from the Huntsville Police Department. Janette Carr and Doris Hancock from the Alabama Attorney General’s Office read a letter that Attorney General Troy King had written to the survivors. Our guest speaker, Maximus Hoffmann, spoke about the challenges he faced after the murder of his mother. He addressed the survivors as his family, noting the special bond he shared with them. Maximus, thank you for sharing your story and life with us. You touched the lives of many that night. Survivor Brande Graham honored Sgt. Ed Cain, who retired December 31st from the Huntsville Police Department as the lead investigator with the Major Crimes Unit. Sgt. Cain attended every event we held, came to several support group meetings, and fought hard for victims of crime. Ed, thank you for giving silent victims a voice and for your support of HSP! You will be greatly missed, and we love you! The event closed with the lighting of the Christmas tree and was followed by a reception afterwards. Thanks to all who helped with this event. A special thanks to the Huntsville Police Department’s “Blue Notes” (pictured below) and their spectacular performance. |
